Once only practiced by locksmiths and crafty crims, locksport is a hobby taking the world by storm. (And we’d know, we supply lock-picking products to over 15,000 customers in more than 25 countries). Moving on from our humble brag there, we really must get into why locksport is totally breaking the hobby world lately – in a good way.

It’s cheap!

Well, that is until you get reallllly addicted and must buy every new lock product to try and conquer. But to begin with, all you need is one of our basic starter kits like the PickPals Intro Lock Pick Set ($29!), and away you go! It’s self-taught, so there are no costly classes to attend to and no exxy join-up fees like other hobbies and sports.

It’s on your on time

If you feel like picking a lock at 2am in your tiger onesie while eating a burger, be our guest. We’re not one to judge. You can practice your locksport from the privacy of your own home or room, whenever you like. So there’s no footing it to training class in the rain – it’s just you on the couch with your lock (and burger).

It’s addictive

Yeah, we mentioned this before. Like a good book you can’t put down, picking a lock can become extremely engaging. The sky is almost the limit when it comes to locks, and the degrees of difficulty go on and on. You won’t want to stop at one!

It’s good for the body and soul

Many of our customers tell us that lock-picking is a great way for them to unwind and relax, assisting them in practising mindfulness. Others claim it helps reduce their anxiety levels and is a form of meditation, while ongoing research suggests working with your hands and solving certain puzzles could be beneficial, citing positive effects on the brain and mental health. Hooray for locksport!

It’s actually not illegal in Australia

Contrary to what others may think (just look at Aunty Sharon’s face at the next family brunch when you mention lock-picking is a legit hobby), locksport is actually completely legal in Australia providing you adhere to the laws and regulations. There is a great locksport community out there

As with almost any hobby, there is usually a really passionate community that love getting together – virtually or in person – to support each other and talk about their craft. Locksport is no exception, pals. So when you get hooked, (not if – it’s a given), rest assured there’ll be plenty of peeps around Australia and the rest of the world to offer advice and tips on your burning lock-picking questions. Our ever-growing list of locksport associations can help hook you up with an organisation near you.
